Jobs To Do Whilst The Fishing Is Poor.

February is in many areas one of the poorest months in the year for sea angling. It is however be a good time to ensure that your gear is sorted and in tip top condition for when the fishing improves in the spring.

Rods which have been stored through the winter need to be checked to make sure the rings have survived as it is better to find out that a ring is faulty weeks before the first trip rather than have the tip ring fall in half as you thread the line whilst the skipper opens the throttles and heads for the horizon! Even if you have been hard at it beach fishing through the autumn and winter a good check over the rod rings is worthwhile as damage can sometimes go unnoticed until a slight chip turns into a parted line at just the wrong moment. If your favourite rod is looking a little tired than a bit of time and effort spent on a rebuild can get it looking as good as new.
Reels always benefit from a good clean and check over and new line is always a good start to the new season.  If a reel does need attention then now is often a good time to get on to the manufacturer’s service department as once they get busy there can be quite a long delay on repairs and part supply.
Stocking up on rigs is another good way of passing winter evenings and a fully stocked trace wallet or two can mean more fishing time when the weather improves.
If lure fishing is your game then checking through your lure collection and replacing any corroded hooks and split rings could see fish that may have been lost landed instead.
